The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) have announced this week, the top ten projects of sustainable architecture and green design.

Recycled guns and knives will be used in London’s Olympic Stadium

Some of the materials used in this sustainable Olympic Stadium are going to be made out of recycled guns and knifes. The Metropolitan Police collected more than 52 tonnes of scrap metal from old keys, knives and guns during the last financial year. Some of the recovered steel, iron and other valuable metals will enjoy a second life at the 2012 Olympic site in Stratford, east London and others will used in the structures of bridges and buildings, as well as in car and train production.

The Urban Forest of the Mad Architects

Yansong Ma, is the spirit of the MAD Architects, and part of a very strong generation of experimental architects in China that are changing the landscape of intelligent practice in the heart of China. Their new project is commercial high-rise building, an “urban forest” located in China. It is made up of curved, abstracted shaped floors which have been layered slightly off-center from one another and they connected by a core cylindrical structure.

European architects transform Dallas city hall parking lot into sustainable urban hillside

Last May, the Central Dallas Community Development Corporation announced an international design competition called “Re:Vision Dallas.” The challenge was to transform a vacant inner-city block behind City Hall into a carbon-neutral community. The competition drew hundreds of entries from top architecture firms and city planners in 14 countries worldwide, but only six entries were chosen as potential designs to further explore for construction and buildout.

Through the combination of several readily available technologies, which include a solar photovoltaic system (PV), geothermal heating and cooling system and solar domestic hot water, the Energy Producing Home has the ability to produce 100 percent of the energy needed to heat and cool the home, run all the appliances and power the occupant’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to and from work.

It is stocked with picture books from all over the world and has an activity room that hosts storytelling events and anime screenings.
