Recycled guns and knives will be used in London’s Olympic Stadium

Some of the materials used in this sustainable Olympic Stadium are going to be made out of recycled guns and knifes. The Metropolitan Police collected more than 52 tonnes of scrap metal from old keys, knives and guns during the last financial year. Some of the recovered steel, iron and other valuable metals will enjoy a second life at the 2012 Olympic site in Stratford, east London and others will used in the structures of bridges and buildings, as well as in car and train production.

Boris Johnson: My ambition is to turn London into the electric car capital of Europe.

The mayor of London Boris Johnson announced to a mayor’s gathering in Copenhagen his ambition to turn London into the electrical car capital of Europe adding 25,000 charging points across the city by 2015.

A phone box reinvented as the UK’s smallest 24/7 public library.

A traditional bright red phone booth was turned into an open library, in Westbury-sub-Mendip in Somerset, UK. The booth was purchased from BT for a mere £1, and the residents cleaned it, installed the shelves and borrowed the first books. The library is now filled with over 100 books ranging from cookbooks to classics, several DVDs and CDs.

A “Ghost Forest” in the Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square. The “Ghost Forest” as it is called is the vision of British artist Angela Palmer. The concept is to present a series of rainforest tree stumps as a ‘ghost forest’ – using the negative space created by the missing trunks as a metaphor for climate change, the absence representing the removal of the world’s ‘lungs’ through continued deforestation.

Climate change: coming to a street near you. New ACT ON CO2 posters campaign across England

The British government begins today a poster campaign warning the public of the dangers of climate change. It is the latest phase in the ACT ON CO2 campaign – huge billboard adverts will appear in 900 locations across England showing how the British seasons could look because of the impacts of climate change.

Despite the risks, the British government has approved 10 sites for new nuclear power stations.

Ten sites deemed suitable for future nuclear plants in England and Wales, while plans for any plants in Scotland, which has two existing sites, were opposed by the Scottish National Party (SNP) government. According to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, nuclear is a “proven and reliable” energy source that will help the UK to reduce its carbon emissions and become more energy independent. Also, the majority of the UK’s ageing nuclear infrastructure will have to be decommissioned by 2023, leading some experts to warn of the prospect of power shortages if capacity is not added.

Iceland has claimed the top spot of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2009 from Norway which slipped to third position behind Finland. Sweden in forth, completed the Nordic countries’ continued dominance of the top four.
