Volunteerism is an expression of active citizenship the means by which citizens raise their voices and respond to needs arising in their communities and in society in general. Despite the differences in traditions, lifestyle, and language barriers, amongst the 27 Member States of the EU, there is a common understanding that the engagement of people in various activities, whether to help each other and their communities, campaign for human rights or for preserving our environment, benefit both the individuals and the society as a whole.
