France wants a ban on international trade in bluefin tuna.
It is certainly a good development that France “wants a ban on international trade in bluefin tuna to come into force in 18 months time in order to protect the over-fished species.” According to Independent the French decision will weigh heavily in the final position adopted by the European Union.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced in 24 November, 2009 a report revealing that the last remaining population of Siberian tigers, the world’s biggest cat and a living symbol for the people of Russia, has likely declined significantly due to the rising tide of poaching, unusual weather and habitat loss.

Mediterranean bluefin tuna close to extinction. EU drops demand for ban on commercial fishing while Japan is stockpiling
Illegal catches of bluefin tuna from the Mediterranean worth £2, 7 billion have slipped through regulator’s nets in the past decade, said Mr.Roberto Bregazzi, a tuna industry analyst in the fishing trade journal Intrafish. Thanks to a new generation of ultra-low freezing technology, Japanese find that can easily speculate with the future commercial value of tuna. Bluefin tuna frozen at -60C now could be sold in several years’ time for astronomical sums if Atlantic bluefin becomes commercially extinct as forecast, a result of the near free-for-all enjoyed by the tuna fleet.

Researches [...]

The hunters, the Inuits and the whales at the IWC
The annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has opened today in Madeira. Japan & Iceland will press for expanding their hunting rights of fin whales, despite the fact that this species is listed as endangered. It is expected to face strong criticism and opposition from anti-whaling and environmental groups.
