A new email sent out last week by Jim Hansen about a draft paper titled “Current GISS Global Surface Temperature Analysis.” Dr Hansen indicates some of the main conclusions: (1) Contrary to popular belief, global warming has not stopped nor has the rate of warming even slowed down in the past decade (Figure 21).

The spectacular colours of Star Birth
This is Sharpless 2-106 (Sh2-106), the hourglass-shaped (bipolar) nebula, a stellar nursery made up of glowing gas and light-scattering dust. The material shrouds a natal high-mass star thought to be mostly responsible for the hourglass shape of the nebula due to high-speed winds which eject material from the forming star deep within.

The Stars behind the Curtain
The nebula NGC 3603, is a giant starburst region, a cosmic factory where stars are continuously being born from the nebula’s extended clouds of gas and dust. Located 22 000 light-years away from the Sun, it is the closest region of this kind known in our galaxy, providing astronomers with a local test bed for studying intense star formation processes, very common in other galaxies, but hard to observe in detail because of their great distance from us.

SOFIA: The world’s biggest, most advanced airborne observatory for the infrared spectrum.
Short for Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA will change the way we view the universe. The 17-ton and 9-foot wide telescope is situated into a Boeing 747 which is going to glide through the stratosphere at 45,000 feet, when the operations begin next year.

Amazing video!!! Atlantis Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver as it docks at the ISS
STS-129. Space shuttle Atlantis was about 600 feet from the International Space Station, when Commander Charles “Scorch” Hobaugh initiated this spectacular back flip rotation, known as the Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver (RPM), about 30 minutes prior to docking.

Live – maybe – Forever with your Bionic Body Parts.
IEEE Spectrum has come up with their own futuristic vision of a medically advanced future where future citizens can go and upgrade themselves. Thus, if one or two of your bones or an organ has been damaged, due to an accident or an illness, you can go at the Bionic Body shop and pick your replacement cyborg parts. The parts which are bionic – engineered to mimic real body parts – would help you function more normally and live – maybe – forever.

Scientists responsibility to society. Lessons from the past
On 1st March 1954, the United States dropped a bomb on the Pasific Island known as a Bikini Atoll. The blast was much larger than the scientists had expected and the wind sent the radioactive material over populated islands. As a result one member of the crew of a Japanese fishing boat died and the [...]

The optical illusion of the spinning ballet dancer
What you actually see is a deforming shadow – a black silhouette – but your brain makes sense of it instantly to see a young woman in full 3-D spinning on her vertical axis in one direction, clockwise or counterclockwise. But keep looking continuously at the picture a bit longer, and you will find out that her movement is ambiguous; indeed, you will probably see the dancer change – for just couple of seconds – direction.

Cybernetics and the stability of complex dynamic systems
William Ross Ashby (1903 -1972) begun his career as a psychiatrist, but after serving in the Royal Medical Corps during WWII he diversified into neurology. The next three decades, Ashby studied the structure of the human brain and the peculiarities of human behaviour. He hoped to explain how mind can be so robust yet composed [...]
